The Body Is Not Broken
It is responding — precisely — to the signals it has been given.
When something in the body stops working the way it used to, the first assumption is almost always the same: something is broken. A part failed. A system malfunctioned. The body, somewhere along the way, made a mistake.
Most of the time, that assumption is wrong.
What Looks Like Failure Is Usually a Response
The body does not generate symptoms at random, and it does not fail quietly out of nowhere. What looks like dysfunction is, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the body doing exactly what it was built to do: responding, precisely and intelligently, to the signal it has actually been receiving. The fatigue, the inflammation, the sleep that won't come, the weight that won't move, the mood that won't lift — these are not malfunctions. They are accurate reports. The system is not broken. It is faithfully executing on the information it has been given.
This reframes the entire question. The problem is rarely that the body has stopped working. The problem is that the signal environment feeding it has degraded, or mismatched what the body actually needs, often so gradually that neither the person nor their symptoms ever announced the moment it happened.
Six Directions Signal Arrives From
Signal is not one input. It arrives constantly, from six directions at once, and a body can only be as coherent as the signal it is receiving across all of them. Nutritional signal — what is actually eaten, how consistently, in what state of digestion and absorption. Mechanical signal — how the body is loaded, moved, and asked to bear weight, or how rarely it is asked to do any of that at all. Environmental signal — the light, temperature, and rhythm a person's days are actually organized around, whether or not that rhythm matches what a body evolved to expect. Neurophysiological signal — how safe or threatened the nervous system perceives itself to be, moment to moment, regardless of what is actually happening. Relational signal — the presence or absence of real connection, and whether a person's relationships communicate safety or vigilance. And informational signal — the beliefs a person carries about their own body, their own capacity, and what is actually possible for them, which shapes physiology as concretely as any of the other five.
A body can be doing everything right in one of these domains and still be destabilized by what is happening in another. This is why fixing diet alone so often fails to resolve a symptom that was never primarily nutritional to begin with, and why the search for the one missing intervention can go on for years without success — the search is usually happening in only one of six directions.
The Paradigm, Not a Metaphor
This is not a reframe offered for comfort. It is the clinical architecture underneath everything Rich and I teach: Perception shapes what signal actually gets through. Signal shapes biology. Biology, given the right conditions, repairs itself — because repair was never something that needed to be manufactured from outside the system. It is what the body already does, reliably, the moment the signal environment stops working against it.
Symptoms are not proof the body is failing. They are proof the body is listening — closely, continuously, and far more accurately than most approaches to health ever give it credit for.
Change the Signal
None of this makes the symptom less real, or the discomfort less worth addressing. It changes where the addressing actually needs to happen. Not further override. Not another instruction layered on top of a system already straining under signals it was never designed to run on. A different signal — clearer, more accurate, better matched to what the body is actually asking for.
Change the signal. The biology follows. It was never broken. It was only ever waiting to hear something different.
